Burger Baron

🍔 Canada’s original rogue burger chain with a cult following.

Burger Baron began in 1957 when Montana entrepreneur Jack McDonnell opened two Alberta locations, dreaming of creating the “McDonald’s of the North.” The idea took off fast, and within a few years, there were over 30 franchises across Canada and the U.S.

But by the 1960s, the rapid growth caused the company to collapse, leaving its name and recipes to be passed along informally — especially among Lebanese immigrant families who revived and reshaped the brand throughout Alberta. Each location became its own unique, independent diner, keeping the spirit (and secret sauce) alive in small towns across the Prairies.

Today, about two dozen Burger Barons remain — each one is proudly independent, and a piece of Canadian food folklore. What started as a dream of fast-food empire has become a beloved grassroots icon, kept alive by family, community, and nostalgia.
